This series is an indulgence in the art of making, not simply as a way of knowing, but of disrupting the certainty of knowledge itself. I challenge our assumptions around the limitations of various artifacts, mechanical, digital, psychological. Each project confronts the social persona of artifacts and reveals a possibility. A possibility of delimitation or radical reinterpretation, at times ugly and at times profound, whether that persona be the electromechanical affordances of the MakeyMakey, the intelligence of ChatGPT, or a national silence that segregates historical artifacts to unwrite queer lives. In the liminal dream before name becomes boundary, what songs can our artifacts unsing?

Dodgem’ Board

The Dodgem’ Board is a handheld, labyrinth-style game, utilizing a MakeyMakey for electronic feedback. The MakeyMakey offers to convert any conducting surface into a button, triggered by skin contact. This project subverts this typical usage by letting the trigger be a metallic ball that never touches the skin directly, and no separate “grounding” action is necessary. The metal ball rolls on the conductible surface of the board, acting as an extension of the finger. The board’s labyrinth is carefully insulated to prevent the circuit from completing itself unless the free-rolling ball touches the walls or magnetic obstacles, triggering a sound effect. This configuration of MakeyMakey allows button-presses to be meaningfully randomized, and serves not to provide a single entertaining game, but rather a structural layout for new possibilities of Making.
